Winter day

Who it’s for

Guests who love food and want the Douro’s other gold. Olives are harvested in northern Portugal mostly from October to December, with late groves sometimes into January, and the new oil is tasted in November and December.

It is the classic Valley day, tuned for winter: the olive-oil museum at Casal de Loivos, lunch at the Cantina de Ventozelo and Port at a family house, without the cruise.

We cannot promise a specific pressing or that the newest oil is on the table on a given day, because it follows the harvest and the museum’s stock. For the classic summer-format day with the cruise, see Douro Valley.

Why in winter

  • New-season olive oil is a November and December thing

  • Olive trees stand among the terraces, and the vines are golden then bare

  • Fewer visitors at the museum and the estates

  • Lunch at the Cantina de Ventozelo, seasonal kitchen

  • Tolls and charging included
