Why winter
A quieter Douro, at its own pace.
The harvest is done and the valley exhales. Vines turn red and gold in November, then stand bare against the terraces. Estates have time to talk, and lunch is a long one.

A note on winter prices. These are season prices for the winter days on this page, 1 November to 31 March. Our year-round tours and their prices stay on the main pages. For comparison: Douro Valley Essentials is €225 pp (private €595 for 2) and the Douro Valley day is €275 pp (private €695 for 2). Port & Stars is a short evening, so it is not like-for-like with Wine & Stars (from €295 pp), and the Winter Journey costs the same as our Lisbon transfer but includes the 3-stop pack (€495).

From 1 November to 31 March. Azeite Novo & Quinta follows the olive season, 1 November to 31 January, with January dates confirmed on enquiry. Almond Blossom Douro is set by the bloom, roughly 20 February to 15 March. Around 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 1 January, please enquire.

In November the vines are usually red and gold, after the harvest. From December they are bare and the winter pruning begins. It is a quieter, more graphic Douro, and the low sun is lovely on the terraces.

Every winter day is weather permitting. We watch the forecast, tell you early if something needs to change, and suggest an alternative of the same spirit where we can. If we cancel, you can reschedule or take a refund.

Our standard terms apply: withdrawals up to 1 week before the day are refundable (minus 5% for the transaction fee) or can be rescheduled to any date up to 2 years later, pending availability. Within the last week, the day can be rescheduled but not refunded. See the full terms.

Yes. Solo guests can join a semi-private day that already has participants. Or you can book a guaranteed solo tour at 150% of the semi-private price per person.

Our winter days do not include one. If you would like to add a short cruise, tell us when you enquire: we will check the operator’s winter timetable, confirm availability and quote it. Weather permitting.

Semi-private days: minimum 2, maximum 5 in the Tesla. The Winter Journey is a private transfer for up to 3 passengers.
