Why these two days
Wine, then cheese, then the mountain
Day one is our classic Douro day: olive oil and wine at Casal de Loivos, a boat on the river, lunch at Ventozelo and Port at a family quinta. In the evening we drive on to the Dão for dinner and a night at Quinta Madre D’Água.
Day two is spent on the farm, among the animals, vineyards, olive groves and the small dairy where Serra da Estrela cheese is made, then lunch and the climb to the top of the Serra.

The two days
Day 1 · Douro Valley
Morning — Pickup, then about 1h45 to Casal de Loivos: an old olive oil mill turned museum, with a tasting of 3 table wines, olive oil, almonds and honey
Midday — Pinhão: a 40-minute boat trip upstream, past the great estates along the shore
Lunch — Quinta de Ventozelo, paired with 3 of the estate’s wines
Afternoon — Port tasting at Quinta Seara D’Ordens, family-owned since 1792
Evening — On to the Dão: dinner and the night at Quinta Madre D’Água
Day 2 · Dão & Serra da Estrela
Morning — A tour of the farm and its animals: goats, Serra da Estrela mountain dogs and Lusitano horses, and in the winter months you can milk the sheep by hand. A horse ride through the vineyard is available as an extra
Morning — The vineyards, named the most beautiful in the Dão four years in a row, the olive groves and the cheese dairy
Lunch — The farm’s cheese, sausages, olives, olive oil and jams, a regional main course with a modern twist, and Dão whites, rosés and reds
Afternoon — Up to the summit of the Serra da Estrela at 1,993 m, past strange rock formations, for a tasting of cheese, ham and liqueurs at the small shops
